"Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit"
(Matthew 28:19)
Adults
A person who has reached the age of reason (normally considered to be about seven years of age), is to be prepared for Baptism through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) or the Rite adapted for children.
Infant Baptism and Baptism of a Child
Parents or legal guardians are responsible for requesting the Sacrament of Baptism for their infant or child under the age of reason. A period of preparation is required for parents or guardians of children who are to be baptized as infants or children below the age of reason.
Parents or legal guardians should be registered members of the parish in which Baptism occurs.
Preparation:
Preparation and celebration of Baptism of infants and children under the age of reason are to be parish based. A parent or legal guardian wishing to have a child baptized is expected to participate in Mass regularly and complete the parish's Baptism preparation program.
Parents or guardians must register for the Baptism preparation, have an interview with the pastor or program director, complete a baptismal registration form, and present the child's birth certificate.
Consent:
The Church requires the consent of at least one biological parent or guardian in order to celebrate Baptism of a an infant or child under the age of reason.
Promise:
For an infant or child below the age of reason to be baptized, at least one practicing Catholic must agree to raise the child in the practice of the faith.
Godparents:
The Church requires a godparent to be a practicing and Confirmed Catholic who is at least 16 years of age. Godparents from another Catholic parish are asked to have their parish verify this information for us. Whenever possible, godparents should participate in Baptism preparation.
The Pastor must verify proper preparation prior to a child's Baptism.
